Icon Of Style

Ray-Ban is a high end manufacturer of sunglasses, founded in 1937 by Bausch & Lomb. They were introduced for the United States Army Air Corps. In 1999, Bausch & Lomb sold the brand to the Italian Luxottica Group for a reported $640 million.
Ray-Bans were created in 1936. Some years earlier, Lieutenant John A. Macready returned from a balloon flying adventure and complained that the sun had permanently damaged his eyes. He contacted Bausch & Lomb asking them to create sunglasses that would provide protection and also look elegant. On May 7, 1937 Bausch & Lomb officially took out the patent on the Ray Ban sunglass. The first sunglass to incorporate an anti-glare lens, the metal frame was extremely lightweight and made from gold-plated metal with two green lenses that filtered out UV rays. They were the first to use polarized technology, which was developed by Edwin H. Land, the founder of the Polaroid Corporation. The U.S.Pilots in the United States Army Air Corps immediately adopted the sunglasses. Ray-Bans quickly became part of American fashion and popular culture. From Presidents to movie stars, rock stars to artists, fashion designers to runway models, there's not a generation alive that can't remember owning (or wanting to own) a pair of these iconic sunglasses. Ray-Bans popularity waned in the Seventies as the disco era ushered in more extravagent eyewear, and designers like Dior and Yves St. Laurent entered the eyewear market.
That all changed in 1982 when Ray-Ban signed a $50,000 a year contract to place Ray-Bans in movies and TV shows. Between 1982 and 1987, Ray-Ban had placed their sunglasses in more than 60 movies and television shows. In the coming years, Ray-Bans would appear in a series of 80s hits, including Miami Vice, Moonlighting, and The Breakfast Club. Sales reached 1.5 million. But Hollywood wasn't the only place that Ray-Ban took hold.
Italian Luxottica Group bought the Ray-Ban Name and Ray-Ban Sunglass Division from USA Bausch & Lomb in the late 1990's. So the new Luxottica Raybans are made in Italy and the old vintage USA B&L Ray-Ban sunglasses made in USA. The new Italian Luxottica Rayban Model, starts with RB.
From the beginning, Ray Ban sunglasses have been at the forefront of eye protection technology. These glasses stay in style not only because of their celebrity appeal but also because they are well made and practical. While styles come and go ... Ray-Ban never stays gone for very long.
